BCCI to Pay Rs 48,000 Crore to Deccan Chargers for Wrongful Termination

Former Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Deccan Chargers have won their arbitration case against the BCCI, in what can be seen as a major embarrassment to the board.

The Bombay High Court has ordered the BCCI to pay a Rs 4,800 crore in compensation in a verdict that was delivered on Friday.

Deccan Chargers, who won franchise rights for the tournament in 2007, were among the original first eight franchises to take part in the cash-rich league.

The team had even won the 2009 edition of the IPL that was held in South Africa.

They were eventually scrapped and the team was sold to Sun Network, who started a new franchise based out of Hyderabad itself known as the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The original case dates back to 8 years ago when the board terminated the agreement with the franchise. The decision was eventually termed ‘unlawful’ by retired justice CK Thakkar.
