Sports Minister Attempts to Fix SLC through Appeal Advisory Committee

Written by Rohit Pawar

The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) election nominees have been summoned by the Appeal Advisory Committee to investigate the objections against their nominations. The objections have been raised by one of the prominent former SLC administrator of the opposition camp! The nominees who have been summoned are – SLC Vice President International Cricket Jayantha Dharmadasa, Vice President Domestic Cricket Ravin Wickramaratne, Treasurer Lasantha Wickramasinghe and others.

However, the twist in the story is that the objections are regarding Cricket Board’s 2021 election, not the upcoming one! That time, Shammi Silva led administration was elected uncontested following the withdrawal of former Board Vice President K. Mathivanan led camp. Now, after almost two years, the opposition has approached Appeal Advisory Committee again for the Inquiry.

And, it raises several questions!

As per Country’s Sports Law, Sports Minister Appoints Appeal Advisory Committee and controls it. So, in this matter, Roshan Ranasinghe comes under scrutiny! As per SLC constitution, any objection against the nominations must be taken up within 7 days by the election committee. If not, then the objectioners should go to the Sports Minister and then court, within 30 days!

Back then, Election Committee rejected the objections. Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa also didn’t entertain the matter!

So, now, after almost two years, why Appeal Advisory Committee, appointed by Roshan Ranasinghe, summoned the election nominees? Is it an agenda driven move?

Notably, Roshan Ranasinghe is at loggerheads with Maitland Place bosses since long time! And, is trying to dissolve the Cricket Board at any cost.

Interestingly, In Sri Lanka, Football and Rugby are already banned, thanks to Roshan Ranasinghe. And, experts fears that Cricket, Island’s most cherished game, will also face the same fate, if Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe continue abusing his powers! Thus, Isn’t a right time for Country’s president to Intervene and safeguard Cricket from Roshan Ranasinghe’s madness?
