BCCI suspends IPL 2025 indefinitely amid escalating tensions with Pakistan

Written by Praveen CA

The Indian Premier League 2025 has been suspended following a sharp escalation in military tensions between India and Pakistan, triggered by the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The decision came a day after the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was abandoned midway in Dharamsala due to air raid alerts in nearby regions of Jammu and Pathankot.

Meanwhile, the IPL caravan had reached Lucknow for the scheduled clash between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, which now stands suspended. At the time of the suspension, 12 league matches and four knockout games—including the final in Kolkata—were yet to be played.

With the BCCI suspending the IPL indefinitely, the immediate priority is to ensure the safe return of players and officials to their respective locations. Several foreign players and staff are expected to depart as early as today.

While the board has not announced any timeline for the tournament’s resumption, a potential window in August-September could be explored. This may come at the cost of India’s scheduled tour of Bangladesh and the Asia Cup, both of which now appear uncertain amid the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict and strained diplomatic ties with Bangladesh. The IPL and BCCI will announce the updated dates for the remainder of the tournament in due time.

Earlier, the May 8 match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was suspended midway due to air raid alerts in nearby Jammu and Pathankot. Spectators were evacuated amid fears of a possible strike, raising serious concerns about the tournament’s viability.

Although IPL chairman Arun Dhumal initially indicated that the May 9 match between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru would proceed as planned, the deteriorating security situation led to a reversal.
