Shubman Gill likely to be named India’s T20I vice-captain for Asia Cup

Written by Rohit Pawar

Shubman Gill recently showcased his leadership credentials by captaining India in the five-match Test series against England, which ended in a draw. After a promising start to his captaincy career, he is now poised to take on a key role in the T20I setup as well.

Gill is likely to be named India’s T20I vice-captain for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. With Suryakumar Yadav expected to be fit for the T20-format event, Gill is set to be named his deputy and make a return to the T20I squad.

With Gill set to return to the T20I setup, the key question is whether he will open the innings or take the No. 3 spot. The Abhishek Sharma–Sanju Samson pairing has been highly effective in recent T20Is, making Gill’s integration into the batting order an intriguing prospect.

Gill’s recent IPL performances with Gujarat Titans have been exceptional — scoring 890 runs at a strike rate of 157.80, 426 at 147.40, and 650 at 155.88 in the last three seasons. His improved strike rate, combined with consistent run-scoring, has strengthened his case for a T20I comeback.

There is growing belief that Gill, currently India’s ODI vice-captain, will eventually take over as the full-time ODI captain. He is even tipped to lead India in the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

According to Dainik Jagran, the upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia this October might not just be another overseas assignment. Instead, it could be the final chapter for both Kohli and Rohit in the 50-over format. If this happens, the series will carry the weight of a farewell rather than just being another competitive contest.
