Yashasvi Jaiswal’s meteoric rise in red-ball cricket continued at Edgbaston on Friday as the 23-year-old became the joint-fastest Indian to score 2,000 runs in Test cricket. He reached the milestone in his 40th innings, equalling legends Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag.
Jaiswal brought up the landmark with his 10th run in India’s second innings on Day 3 of the second Test against England. At 23 years and 188 days, he also became the second-youngest Indian to reach the milestone – only Sachin Tendulkar (20 years, 330 days) was younger.
40 – Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Yashasvi Jaiswal
43 – Vijay Hazare, Gautam Gambhir
44 – Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar
45 – Sourav Ganguly
46 – Cheteshwar Pujara
The landmark came on the back of yet another composed knock. In the first innings, Jaiswal scored a fluent 87, showing maturity beyond his years. He weathered the early movement, stitched crucial partnerships – 72 with Karun Nair and 54 with Shubman Gill – and batted with calculated aggression before falling to Ben Stokes.
Jaiswal also crossed 4,000 first-class runs during the knock, reaching the figure in his 40th match at an average of nearly 59. His First-Class tally includes 14 centuries and 14 fifties – a reflection of his hunger for big scores.
