Chennai Super Kings finished in last place in the Indian Premier League 2025 despite comprehensively winning their final match against Gujarat Titans. This was the first time in the history of the Indian Premier League that CSK finished in the bottom place.
Earlier, CSK’s worst finish in the IPL came in the 2022 season, where the team concluded the tournament in 9th position. In 2025, the franchise fared worse, playing an outdated brand of cricket in the rapidly developing landscape of T20s.
Chennai Super Kings struggled in both departments of the game this season. After winning the El Clasico at home against Mumbai Indians, the team lost their way. The failure of the batting unit was key in CSK’s season of crash and burn. All-rounders Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja top-scored for the team this season, with 357 and 301 runs respectively.
With the ball, it was Noor Ahmad who fared the best with 24 wickets to his name. The big names in the Chennai Super Kings squad — Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin — failed to have an impact on the tournament.
MS Dhoni said that the team had not done well in any department of the game, including catching this season. Dhoni said that while they did finish on a high, they would look to do better next season.
MS Dhoni remained coy on his retirement from the Indian Premier League after Chennai’s final match against Gujarat Titans. Dhoni said that he would give his body 4-5 months to recover and then take a call on playing the next season of the tournament.
“It depends. I would say the same thing. I have 4-5 months to decide. There is no hurry to decide what needs to be done. Every year it’s 50% more effort to keep the body fit. It is the top level of cricket. If cricketers start retiring because of performances, few of them will retire at 22. What is important to see is how much hunger and fitness you have and how much you can contribute to the team, whether the team needs you. I have enough time. I’ll go back to Ranchi, haven’t been home for a long time. Enjoy a few bike rides. Couple of months then I will decide.”
