Former India head coach Ravi Shastri could not believe that Virat Kohli called time on his Test career. Kohli took to Instagram to announce his Test retirement on Monday, May 12, signing off from an incredible 14-year-long career in the whites.

Reacting to the announcement on X, Shastri called Virat Kohli a modern-day giant and further termed him as the true ambassador of Test cricket. Kohli and Shastri shared an excellent relationship in international cricket, taking India to the highest in the red-ball format.

Under Shastri and Kohli, India saw their most dominating period in Test cricket, where they beat Australia for the first time away from home in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Kohli, under the tutelage of Shastri, was also responsible for changing India’s brand of Test cricket and building the fast bowling crop that India is still benefiting from.

“Can’t believe you are done. You are a modern-day GIANT and were a fantastic ambassador for Test match cricket in every way you played and captained. Thank you for the lasting memories you’ve given to everyone, and to me in particular. It’s something I will cherish for life. Go well, champ. God bless,” Shastri said on X hours after Kohli’s retirement.
