The Head Coach of the Mumbai Indians and former Sri Lanka captain, Mahela Jayawardene, has made a startling revelation, explaining why Rohit Sharma has been used as an impact substitute in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League.
According to Times of India, the Indian captain and opening batter for the five-time champions, Rohit Sharma has been carrying a niggle since the national team’s recent victory in the Champions Trophy 2025.
Jayawardene revealed this information ahead of the franchise’s upcoming league-stage fixture against the Gujarat Titans, explaining his repeated use as an impact substitute rather than an on-field player for full games.
Under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, the Indian team went on a blistering run through the Champions Trophy, where they finished the tournament unbeaten as they clinched the big finale by beating New Zealand by four wickets and an over to spare.
Barring the first game of the season against the Chennai Super Kings, Rohit has been brought in or out as an impact substitute throughout the campaign, which often raised eyebrows amongst the fans, considering the wealth of experience the 38-year-old brings as a player and as a captain.
Rohit’s batting form will also be a big positive. His form has resonated with the franchise’s result in the 2025 season. After having a woeful start to the season, the former skipper seems to have found his form and has now amassed a total of 293 runs in 10 games and could also be on track for his first 400+ season since 2019.
