Rohit Sharma was an underachiever but has now become a match-winner in Test cricket: Mark Waugh

Australian batting great Mark Waugh heaped rich praise on Rohit Sharma, saying the India captain has evolved from being a terrific white-ball player to becoming a match-winner in Test cricket too. Waugh said Rohit was a bit of an underachiever in Test cricket but his second-wind in whites has been nothing short of brilliant.

Waugh’s comments came after Rohit Sharma hit a match-winning hundred on a spin-friendly pitch in the first of the much-anticipated 4-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Roht was the only batter from both sides to get a hundred as he towered above the rest in Nagpur where most other batters in the top order struggled.

“He has got the discipline, he has got the range of shots. It’s all about the mental game now. He is a class player, in all conditions. He plays well overseas, he has got a perfect game for Indian conditions. He has got the range, he watches the ball so closely, and he has got great hands. He reads the game well, he can go up the gear and down the gear, according to the situation,” Mark Waugh told Star Sports.

Rohit was under some pressure ahead of the Nagpur Test as he had missed 5 of the 7 Tests in 2022 due to injury and illness. However, the skipper looked assured and determined as he stamped his authority over the Australian bowling unit in Nagpur.
