Had no doubt that Pant would be best man for the job: Iyer

Written by Abhishek Patil

Rishabh Pant was named the captain of the Delhi Capitals for IPL 2021 season after Shreyas Iyer was ruled out due to a shoulder injury. India wicket-keeper batsman continued his fairy tale run on the cricketing circuit as he was named the skipper of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals. A change in captaincy had to be made by the franchise as primary skipper Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the season due to a shoulder injury. Reacting to Pant’s appointment, Iyer said that he had no doubt over the team’s decision.

Not many reckoned Pant as the ideal candidate for the job as the Delhi Capitals roster consisted of some incredibly experienced players like Ravichandran Ashwin, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane and Steve Smith. Yet, it was Pant who saw his status being elevated from vice-captain to captain in the absence of Iyer.

“When I sustained the shoulder injury, and Delhi Capitals needed a leader for this edition of the IPL, I had no doubt that Rishabh would be the best man for the job. He has all my good wishes to make amazing things happen with our absolutely incredible team. I’m going to miss the team tremendously, and will be cheering for them throughout,” Iyer has said in a release from DC.

Delhi have done incredibly well under the leadership of Iyer. From reaching the playoffs in the very first season under the guidance of the middle-order batsman to playing in the final of the tournament last year, the franchise has grown leaps and bounds over the last two years.

While Pant is now set to take on the leadership role in the team in the absence of Iyer, the DC management also has a huge task in front of them to name a batting replacement for the latter too.
