How SLC played ‘within constitution’ at AGM?

Written by Pushpendra Albe

The much awaited Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) on Sunday (May 12) turned out to be a controversial affair, as the former secretary Nishantha Ranatunga walked out midway through by stating that the procedure of the calling for the meeting was invalid. After Nishantha departure, SLC administration conducted the AGM and adjourned for another date.

However, when Cricket Age investigated the matter, it emerged that the SLC had covered all the bases well within the board constitution before calling for the AGM and secretary Mohan De Silva, a board administrator with two decades experience and clean image, took all the right measures to avoid any sort of hiccups.

1. The Draft for the AGM/EGM was put to management committee on 20th March. The management committee is ExCo quorum, and according to the SLC constitution, can take decisions to be ratified by ExCo.

2. Management committee made certain amendments and this was put to ExCo on 30th March. The ExCo ratified to go ahead with the recommended amendments.

3. Then the draft was resubmitted to the management committee with the amendments on 2nd April and approved.

4. Then it was Forwarded to ExCo again for information/ratification on 30th April.

By following all these procedures, the SLC made sure that there were no technical errors left, unlike 30th May 2018, when Thilanga Sumathipala led administration had to leave the board on same!

“From SLC side, the board had obtained approval on 30th March subject to amendments, and on 2nd April those amendments were tabled too and approved. Then, resolutions were circulated on 8th April after obtaining approval on 30th March and 2nd April respectively” a top SLC official told Cricket Age.

“It seems someone is basing his argument on the minute of the next ExCo, at which the resolutions passed by the MC were confirmed/ratified” the official added further.
