Chennai Super Kings’ David Willey withdraws from IPL due to personal reasons

In the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 edition, The defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opened their campaign with a thumping victory versus Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Further, they got the better of a revamped Delhi Capitals (DC)  franchise at their own backyard. However, they have been dealt with a big blow ahead of their next tie against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Sunday (March 31).

England’s David Willey was supposed to join the CSK camp soon. However, the Englishman decided to pull out of the ongoing season as he awaits the birth of his second child. The all-rounder shared that his family needs him right now, and cricket will take a backseat for him currently.

Speaking at Yorkshire’s pre-season media day, Willey stated, “Unfortunately, due to family reasons I’ve had to pull out of the IPL. Chennai were very understanding and supportive as Yorkshire have been as well.”

“It’s never an easy decision. Nonetheless, it’s the right decision for the family. We are due to have our second baby and my wife has had a bit of a tough time so I need to be in England,” added the 29-year-old.

Willey, who came in as a replacement for Kedar Jadhav during the previous edition of the IPL, played only a handful of matches for the Yellow Brigade. In 3 games, the left-hander didn’t get a chance to showcase his credentials with the willow but picked up two wickets at an economy rate of 9.50.

CSK already have a depleted fast bowling lineup with South African speedster Lungi Ngidi pulling out of the competition due to injury. His replacement is yet to be named by the franchise. With Willey’s withdrawal, the defending champions have to find another replacement soon.
