‘Consistency has plagued us in the past’ – Jason Holder

Jason Holder, the Windies captain, has called for more consistency from his batsmen in the three-Test series against England.

Holder, who missed the Windies’ last Test series, against Bangladesh, due to injury, returns as captain ahead of the first Test in Barbados starting 23 January. “Our consistency is something that has really plagued us in the past,” he said at the Kensington Oval on Tuesday.

“Particularly with our batting. Our batting has probably let us down on a few occasions. I just think we need to start the series well by putting some runs on the board in the first innings and making an early statement.”

Only Daren Bravo averages over 40 with the bat in the current Windies squad and the likes of Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer, the men touted to be the future stars, have shown sparks of brilliance, but will now need to shine regularly.

“We definitely know we can perform against this attack. It’s just a case of being consistent and sticking to our game plans for long periods.”

Inconsistent as the batting has been, the bowling attack showed promise. Holder and Shannon Gabriel averaged under 20 with the ball in 2018 and when you add Kemar Roach to the mix, a potent attack takes shape.

“What you’ve seen of this attack in the last couple of series is consistency,” said the captain. “We’ve done a hell of a job of trying to take 20 wickets more often than not. We have some seasoned campaigners in Roach and Gabriel who have led the bowling attack nicely and I hope we can continue in that direction.”
