Chandimal-Mathews achieves rare feat against India

Written by Toshi Pawar

On the third day of Delhi test, Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews, Captain and former Captain of Sri Lanka respectively, demonstrated the real test cricket, something that the three test series was seriously missing till then.

Against the best bowling pair in the world, and some quality fast bowling, both the batsmen showed immense character.

During their marathon partnership of 181, that rescued and brought back Sri Lanka into the game, they were able to keep India at bay.

During their rescue innings, Mathews and Chandimal became the first visiting pair in India last 5 years to share a partnership of 400+ balls. Last 400+ partnership against India in India was in 2013, when English batsmen Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott put a partnership of 470 balls.

Following the lead of Mathews, Chandimal also notched up his 10th Test hundred. Incidentally, this was also his second ton against India. In a composed knock which featured 13 boundaries, Chandimal was in total command at the crease. However, with the dismissal of Mathews, he remains as the key to reducing the deficit going on the fourth day.
