Dilruwan Perera, the unsung hero of Sri Lanka

Written by Pushpendra Albe

On day two, when Sri Lanka were desperately looking to put 500 runs on the board, against Bangladesh in the Galle test, Dilruwan Perera rose through the occasion and guided the team towards a formidable score, with a fluent half century.

This is dilruwan Perera for you. A classical off spinner, Over the years he has been a unsung hero of Sri Lanka team, a go to men for his captain. After the retirement of great Muthiah Muralitharan, he emerged a perfect spin partner of rangana herath. and his bowling statistics shows he can be deadly on spinning tracks.

He is the fastest Sri Lankan bowler to reach 50 test wickets. And, indeed, it is a great achievement, considering that the island had produced some of the greatest spinners like- Murali and Herath. And, he is no less effective with the bat either, as he showed yesterday. In 2007, he made his ODI debut as a opener, and hit a fluent 95 in his debut test against Pakistan in 2014.

At 34, he has still few years left in his cricket and as Rangna Herath is in the twilight of his career, Sri Lanka needs Dilruwan Perera more than ever!
