Even Two Victories Might Not Be Enough: India’s Tough Road To T20 World Cup Semis

Written by Vipin Darwade

A firm favourite, India‘s fortunes have swung dramatically following a big defeat to South Africa in the Super 8 round of the 2026 T20 World Cup. India, the defending champions, had history and recent form in their favour, but South Africa outshone them in Ahmedabad to grab crucial points and give their net run-rate a massive boost to set the pace in the race for the semifinals.

Eight teams qualified for the second round of the T20 World Cup and were divided into two groups. Group 1 features four teams including India, South Africa, Zimbabwe and West Indies, while England, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Pakistan form Group 2.

South Africa have taken the top spot in Group 1 with two points and boast a superb NRR of 3.8. India are bottom of the standings now with a negative NRR (-3.8).

Yes, the race is still wide open even though South Africa have taken the lead. To advance though, India will have to not only beat Zimbabwe and West Indies but also by significant margins to ensure that if it comes down to NRR, should multiple teams finish level on points, they have enough to edge ahead.

Both Zimbabwe and West Indies, like India, have qualified for this round unbeaten.

If teams finish on equal points in their respective group, here’s how the semifinalists will be decided:

  • The team with the greatest number of wins in its group to be placed in the higher position.
  • If there are teams with equal points and equal wins in their group, the team with the better NRR in the Super 8 round will be placed in the higher position.
  • If two or more teams are still equal, they will be ordered according to the head-to-head match played between them.

In the rare case of the above-mentioned conditions not separating semifinalists or if all matches within a group produce no results, then the teams will be ordered as per their position on the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings as on 6 February 2026.
