It was atrocious: Shreyas Iyer shuns cliches after India slip to new low

India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer was in no mood to defend his team’s “atrocious” performance after the reigning world champions crashed to a stunning 125-run defeat to England on Tuesday.

The margin of defeat in the second T20I is India’s biggest in the format’s history.

It also extended India’s winless run under Iyer in T20Is having taken over the reins with the recent Ireland T20I series.

Chasing a daunting target of 202 at Trent Bridge, the visitors endured a dramatic collapse, folding for just 76 in 11.4 overs.

“It was atrocious, losing by that margin is not acceptable. First things first, we have to accept the loss and go back to drawing board,” Iyer said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Reflecting on the contest, the Indian skipper felt England’s total was beyond what the conditions warranted. According to him, the early damage inflicted during the powerplay left India with too much to recover from.

“I don’t think it was a 200 wicket. We lost four wickets in the powerplay and that itself pushed us back. You can plan a lot but once you come to the ground you need to adapt. Try to figure out what is the right length. I felt the hard length was tough (to hit) and we didn’t execute,” he said.

Despite the heavy defeat, Iyer stressed the importance of moving on quickly while urging every player to take responsibility for contributing more effectively in the matches ahead.

“We need to come back strong and not dwell too much about the past. Every individual has to think and see how they can contribute to the team,” Iyer said.
