Resilient, spirited Team India defeat ‘trophy thief’ Mohsin Naqvi’s petty attempt to steal the spotlight

After being denied of their moment in the spotlight by a lame attempt from PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, the Indian team showed, through humour and passion, that their spirit will not be dimmed by any underhand tactics and celebrated their Asia Cup win.

Pakistan Cricket Board chief Mohsin Naqvi, also the head of Asian cricket, walked away with it after India refused to accept the prize from his hands. Their stand was firm, born in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack and the cross-border hostilities that followed. A team that refused handshakes with Pakistan’s cricketers was never going to take a trophy from Naqvi — a minister in the Pakistan government still in denial over the precision and intensity of India’s retaliatory strikes. From a man who provoked India during the tournament and proved himself unworthy of the post he held, there was never going to be acceptance.

Knowing he would be shunned on the dais, Naqvi chose to steal India’s thunder, keeping the silverware out of reach. But India’s celebration could not be stolen.

Suryakumar Yadav gathered his troops and led them to the stage. Cheered on by a passionate band of supporters who remained despite Naqvi’s antics delaying the ceremony by more than an hour, the Indian team claimed their moment. The absence of the trophy mattered little; their joy, their spirit, and their triumph were untouchable.

Suryakumar even pulled off the iconic Ric Flair strut, echoing Rohit Sharma’s swagger from the T20 World Cup ceremony a year earlier. He raised his hands to lift an imaginary trophy, and the fans roared in approval. At that moment, illusion was as powerful as reality. The boys broke into dance as Bollywood tunes rang out through the stadium, their laughter and energy drowning out every shadow of the stolen silver.

Denied the cup, yet crowned in spirit, India celebrated as champions all the same.

So, what really happened? Well, India made their point clear. They won’t accept the trophy from the ACC chief. After all, this was the same man who decided to continue to mock the Indian team with the fighter jet gesture.

India were well within their rights to ask for a change, and they wanted to take the trophy from Emirates Cricket Board vice-chairman Khalid Al Zarooni. But this was denied by Naqvi himself and an impasse couldn’t be reached.

What followed was seeing an ACC official runaway with the trophy, something that shocked Suryakumar.

“This is one thing that I have never seen since I started playing and following cricket, that a champion team is denied a trophy, that too is a hard-earned one. It’s not like it was easy. We played two back-to-back good games in two days, I felt that we deserved it. I can’t say anything more,” said the Indian captain.

Naqvi’s petty attempt to steal the spotlight had backfired. Instead of dimming India’s joy, it gave the team another reason to delight their fans, showing their true character: resilient, spirited, and never short of fun. A clear message to Naqvi — when you come for the kings, better be ready.
