The need of two wins and arrival of Thirimane-Chandimal

Written by Vipin Darwade

As the Sri Lanka have already lost the first two matches of ongoing ODI series against India, Now they are finding themselves in a situation of do or die! In order to directly qualify for the 2019 world cup, Sri Lanka will have to win at least two matches, from the remaining three.

Though, at the moment, team is in state of bother, as combination of the team going in disarray by each passing minute. Just appointed captain Upul Tharanga already been suspended for next two matches due to slow over rate by ICC, and add to woes Danushka Gunathilika also out of the series with injury.

With Gunathilika as opener and Tharanga batting at number four, Sri Lanka at least were started to settle down in batting order. Gunathilika, the dashing left-handed opener, was particularly in sparkling form in recent months, having played some eye catching knocks against India (in champions trophy) and Zimbabwe.

Now, as they are in must win situation, the top order batting is set to reshuffle big time again, as selectors have recalled Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimane.

Thirimane hasn’t played a ODI game for Sri Lanka since 2016 and the form of Dinesh Chandimal in recent months is nothing more than dismal.

Though, West Indies, the team that surpass Sri Lanka in rankings to qualify for the world cup, is also in a pathetic ODI form. Also, they will have to win the ODI series against England to confirm a World Cup spot, which seems next to impossible.

But, yes west Indies have shown the desire to fight, as they recalled Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels  and other senior players, everything is possible!
