The Indian men’s cricket team, led by Shubman Gill, is set to tour Sri Lanka later this year for a two-match Test series. The first Test is scheduled to be played at the Galle International Stadium from August 15 to 19, while the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Ground in Colombo is likely to host the second Test from August 23.
India last toured Sri Lanka for a Test series in July-August 2017 under the captaincy of Virat Kohli. The most recent Test series between the two sides, however, was played in March 2022 in India.
The upcoming two-match series will be part of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle and could prove crucial for India’s hopes of securing a place in the final.
As things stand, India are placed sixth in the WTC 2025-27 standings, having registered four wins, suffered four defeats, and drawn one match.
India could also play a three-match T20I series during the tour, THOUGH, NOTHING HAS FINALIZED AS YET.
“There is a request for three matches and we will finalise the schedule soon,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said.
The Indian men’s cricket team has played 46 Test matches against Sri Lanka so far, winning 22 of them. Sri Lanka have registered seven victories, while 17 matches have ended in draws.
In Sri Lanka, India have enjoyed a strong record, winning nine of the 24 Tests played between the two sides. Sri Lanka have won seven matches at home, while the remaining eight contests have ended in draws.
In the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle, Sri Lanka have played two Tests, registering one win against Bangladesh while the other match ended in a draw. With a points percentage (PCT) of 66.67, Sri Lanka currently occupy third place in the standings.
A successful series against India would significantly strengthen Sri Lanka’s chances of finishing in the top four and potentially securing a place in the WTC 2027 final.
