Sri Lanka Cricket’s scheduled AGM cancelled

Written by N Krishnamurthy

The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has cancelled its Annual General Meeting (AGM) which was scheduled to be held on May 31st, Cricket Age Exclusively learns.

The decision has been made by the Cricket Transformation Committee (CTC) appointed by Sports Minister and Chaired by former MP Eran Wickramaratne following the mass resignations of democratically elected Shammi Silva led administration last month.

“Accordingly, the AGM will be convened under the newly constituted Executive Committee of SLC, once such committee is duly appointed” reads the CTS’s letter addressed to membership clubs.

However, Cricket Age understands that the CTC doesn’t have the power to cancel the AGM, as they have been assigned to oversee SLC’s day to day affairs only until ICC’s recognition. Accordingly, the AGM cancellation must come through the Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage, not by the CTC.

It has also been surfaced that Sidath Wettimuny and Dinal Phillips, two members of the CTC, are primary petitioner in a case pending before the Court of Appeal (CA Writ 460/2020), in which they have initiated legal proceedings against the Minister of Sports, the Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, and SLC.

It is perplexing that both individuals engaged in ongoing litigation against the Sports Ministry, have now been Included in the CTC to the very institution they are challenging in court.
