Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill reinforced his self-belief for the public ahead of the 2026 IPL season. The 26-year-old, out of the T20 World Cup squad, said he has nothing to prove to anyone because he has been the top-scorer in the IPL for the last few years.
Indeed, since 2022, Gill has scored the chart-topping 2449 runs at an average of 46.2 and a strike-rate of 149.78. Only Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) talisman Virat Kohli comes close with 2378 runs. In comparison, his T20I competitors Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan have scored 1575 (strike rate of 167.37), 1636 (strike rate of 149.13) and 1546 (strike rate of 138.9) runs respectively.
“I think if you look at the past three or four seasons, I think I have the most runs in IPL. So I don’t think I don’t have anything to prove in this season, particularly,” Gill said at the pre-season press conference, as quoted by PTI. “And the four years that I’ve played for this team, I think we have done decently well as a team. And I think I’ve done decently well as a batsman. So I don’t think I need to prove to anyone my worth,” he added.
Gill got Samson’s opening spot in the T20I team before the 2025 Asia Cup but couldn’t make the most of his chances, leading to him being replaced by the Kerala star at the start of the year.
He might not have much to prove as a batter, but Gill does have some pressure to showcase GT’s best as a skipper. The franchise outperformed all expectations by winning the title in its first year. But a combination of poor auctions and bad execution has prevented them from scaling the same heights since Hardik Pandya left and Gill became the captain. But he’s confident that a second title isn’t too far away.
“I think I need to do what I’ve been doing for the past four years. And as a team, we need to be consistent, which I think we have been. If we continue doing that, sooner or later, I think we will win that trophy once more,” Gill said.
