Jay Shah set to run for ICC chairman’s post in November

Written by N Krishnamurthy

BCCI secretary Jay Shah is in the running for the post of chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah could quit the role of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president in order to run for the election for ICC chairman, scheduled for November this year.

Should Shah opt to participate in the elections for ICC chairman’s post, then he would have to resign as ACC president, since the post of ICC chairman is an independent one. Shah is in his second two-year term as the president of ACC. Greg Barclay is the current chairman of the ICC. In November 2022, Barclay had been unanimously elected as ICC chairman for a second two-year term that expires this year.

This will be one of the few major agendas in the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the ACC, that is being held in Bali, Indonesia on 30 and 31 January. All members of the ACC, including Jay Shah himself, will take part in the ACC AGM. The other major agendas include discussions regarding the venue for the next Asia Cup, that will reportedly be held in the T20 format. According to Cricbuzz, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman are among several contenders to host the next Asia Cup.

The 2023 Asia Cup was held in a hybrid model, with Pakistan and Sri Lanka sharing the hosting rights. India had played all of their matches in Sri Lanka. India had beaten Sri Lanka in the final of that tournament in Colombo.

Another point of discussion during the two-day meeting will be regarding the ACC media rights. Disney Star has had the ACC media rights for the last eight years, but that could change given the rapidly changing sports broadcasting industry in India. Cricbuzz has reported that the ACC has invited a few big broadcasters for a dinner on Tuesday.
