Sports Minister Explains New Gazette to former SLC presidents, secretaries!

Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe Monday Invited all former elected and Interim committee presidents and secretaries of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to explain them in brief about his newly brought Gazette, Cricket Age Exclusively learns.

Sri Lanka’s World Cup winning Iconic captain Arjuna Ranatunga, his brother and former secretary Nishantha Ranatunga, former presidents Upali Dharmadasa, stalwart K. Mathivanan and Thilanga Sumathipala and former Interim committee secretary Kushil Gunasekera were present at the meeting. However, Cricket Board’s present office bearers were not invited! Few former stalwarts like legendary Sidath Wettimuny, Ana Punchihewa and Michael Tissera couldn’t attend the meeting, due to their prior committments.

According to sources, everyone showed faith in Sports Minister’s new Gazette and backed him to Implement it for the betterment of the game!

“Everyone was agree with the new Gazette, as Honorable Minister explained it effectively and termed it as need of the hour” a highly placed source told Cricket Age.

A series of regulations was Issued by the Sports Minister on December 14 last year, with regard to the matters including the tenure of Sports Associations, holding elections, term of office of the positions held in sports associations and age limitations.

As per the new Gazette, any person who has held office as President of a sports body for four years (two terms) will become ineligible to hold office for a third term. Although that person can hold any other position other than President in the sports body if he had served that association, federation or board in any other capacity for a period of four more years, totaling to eight years of service to the sport, he will become ineligible to hold any position.

Furthermore, any official who has served a sports body for eight years in any capacity becomes ineligible to serve furthermore. Cricket in particular was supposed to face an overhaul change following the Ministerial directive.
