Sports Minister Tries to Fix Sri Lanka Cricket Through “Fact Finding Committee”

Written by Rohit Pawar

That Country’s Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) top Officials are at loggerheads is not a secret anymore! Keen observers of Island’s most cherished game now opines that Ranasinghe is on disagreement with Maitland Place hierarchy in almost everything! Reason is given out that maybe Minister wants to desolve Shammi Silva led administration and appoint an interim committee to run the show!

Those rumours and predictions have been sparked once again, as now Minister has appointed a 6-member fact finding committee to Investigate Sri Lanka players conduct during recently concluded T20 World Cup.

The investigative committee, which has been appointed under Sri Lanka’s Sports Act, will be headed by retired Supreme Court Judge Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena. Former Ministry Secretary Kingsley Fernando, Retired DIG Sudath Nagahamulla, Retired Rear Admiral Ananda Peiris, former cricketer Nalin de Alwis, and Lawyer Shalini Roshana Fernando are the remaining five members of the committee.

However, rumours are that Instead of Players behaviour, Minister wants to Fix Cricket Board Itself!

And there are obvious reasons to believe in these theories. Indeed, players like Danushka Gunathilaka and Chamika Karunaratne shamed not only cricket but entire nation with their conduct in a global event! But, the SLC has already punished them and also set up it’s own Inquiry Committees!

So, Isn’t appointing another committee an act of undermining SLC? Also, barring Nalin de Alwis, other committee members hardly knows a word about Cricket! Thus, will they be able to understand that Gunathilaka and Chamika are adults, professional cricketers and are directly held responsible for their conduct! These sort of unfortunate Incidents have been recorded everywhere, Including game’s power centre India (KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya Incident). However, Indian Sports Minister didn’t jump on the gun and punished BCCI for players act!

Likewise, SLC also should not be targeted for Gunathilaka and Chamika’s behaviour! Else, the rumours will be spreaded that the Minister wants to Fix Cricket Board, Instead of Players!
