At a time when other former Sri Lanka cricketers are also backing and supporting certain politicians in the upcoming parliamentary election according to their ideology, preference or other interests, former off-spinner turned businessman Muttiah Muralitharan has thrown his weight behind Minister Wimal Weerawansa’s campaign. The parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka are scheduled to be held on 5 August 2020.

As per Weerawansa’s media unit, Muralitharan had organised a meeting between the minister and Tamil businessmen in Colombo over the weekend. The meeting took place at the Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo and was attended by a number of Tamil businessmen.

Tamil businessmen representing traders in Pettah were among those who attended the meeting. Weerawansa’s media unit said that after addressing the meeting Minister Wimal Weerawansa offered solutions to the issues faced by the Tamil businessmen.

Muralitharan’s brother Muttiah Prabhakaran is also contesting the forthcoming general election from Nuwara Eliya District from the Rajapaksa’s party Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). Muralitharan, who retired from the cricket in 2010, is considered a loyal of Rajapaksa family.
