MS Dhoni better captain than Sourav Ganguly in Indian conditions: Kris Srikkanth

Written by Toshi Pawar

Former India captain Kris Srikkanth has rated MS Dhoni as the better Test captain than legendary Sourav Ganguly. However, Kris Srikkanth said comparisons between MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly was difficult to make.

Kris Srikkanth also praised Sourav Ganguly for his magical captaincy during the 2001 home series against Australia. The Kangaroos were looking to create history by planning to win the Kolkata Test match and take an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the 3-match Test series but Sourav Ganguly inspired his team to an extent that an unimaginable feat was achieved. In the process Sourav Ganguly was also successful in breaking Australia’s winning streak of 16 Test matches on the trot.

India bounced back after following-on and then went on to win the match by a massive margin of 171 runs.

“It’s a very, very difficult comparison. In the 2001 series against Australia, I think Sourav Ganguly was fantastic. Coming back and beating Steve Waugh’s side,” Kris Srikkanth said on Star Sports show ‘Cricket Connected’.

On the contrary, Srikkanth opined that in the long run MS Dhoni turned out to be the captain in India’s home Test series’. Srikkanth also added that unlike Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni didn’t have the luxury of having Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh in his team.

“But overall, who has had more impact in long home series? Definitely, I think MS Dhoni. Sourav had the benefit of having Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble while he was playing. Dhoni did not have that luxury. If you look at the home track record, definitely I think Dhoni was better,” Srikkanth stated.
