Is Money-Driven BCCI killing Team India With Too Much Cricket?

Written by Rohit Pawar

BCCI is the undisputed Flag bearer of World Cricket. It is the richest board amongst all and powerful too. Many a times, even ICC, the governing body of cricket, looks helpless against BCCI.

However, in order to maintain its Status, it seems BCCI asking too much from the players!

2017 was one of the most busy year for tram India, in which team played non stop cricket. They toured Sri Lanka in August, hosted New Zealand and Australia series in October-November, then again a home series against Sri Lanka in December. In 2018, team India is in South Africa since the start of the year.

Now, while South Africa tour hasn’t finished yet, Selectors are on the verge to select the team for the Nidahas Trophy, not surprisingly, again on Sri Lanka Soil.

India will face Sri Lanka in the opening match of the triangular Twenty20 tournament. Apart from India and Sri Lanka, Bangladesh will also be participating in the three-nation tournament. The tournament has been organised in order to mark the 70th anniversary of Sri Lanka’s independence. The matches will be played under lights at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

As expected, even before selectors to meet to finalize the team, there are reports that Players like Virat Kohli, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah will be rested.

Since last one year, Kohli has not only been playing non stop cricket, is also burdening with dual responsibility of the captain of these team as well as the premier batsman. He only got rest for the three match T20 Series against Sri Lanka, when he got married with Actress Anushka Sharma in December.

Just after finishing few Wedding receptions here and there, he had to depart for South Africa tour!

Same story with Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, who have been India’s star performers across formats, and playing non stop cricket.

Bhuvneshwar has bowled around 100 overs including the Test and ODI series against South Africa. If he bowls his full quota in T20 Internationals, he will end up with 112 overs under his belt.

But no one would have bowled more than Bumrah, who is one of the three players (apart from Kohli and Hardik Pandya) to have played all the matches in the tour so far. If Bumrah also bowls his full quota of overs in the three T20Is, he would have bowled more than 166 overs, which is a lot of overs in international cricket.

Situation is crystal clear : Players are tired with unlimited action. However, at the same time BCCI is not looking of this aspect. So, after Nidahas Trophy, Indian players will have to feature multi million IPL!
