Chamara Kapugedera to captain Sri Lanka in Tharanga absence

Written by Shreyas Vyas

Sri Lanka selectors have appointed middle order batsman Chamara Kapugedera as the captain for the next two matches, as regular captain Upul Tharanga has been suspended for slow over rate.

Even though selectors have added Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimane in the squad to replace Tharanga and injured Danushka Gunathilika, they have decided to appoint Kapugedera as captain.

In recently concluded provincial tournament, Kapugedera had captained his provincial team, and was in prime form, as he had smashed two hundreds before suffering from an injury.

Yesterday, during the second ODI, when Sri Lanka were reeling at 121/5 Kapugedera anchored the innings and added 91 runs with Milinda Siriwardena to push team to a respectable total.

Although selectors have added Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimane, with the appointment of Kapugedera, they gave a strong signal that Chandimal is not in their scheme of things as a limited over captain and they will continue to stick with Upul Tharanga.

India is leading the Five match ODI series 2-0, as third match will be played on Sunday at Pallekele.
