Akila Dhananjaya gets much deserved recall

Written by Pushpendra Albe

Mystery spinner Akila Dhananjaya has been selected for the ODI series against Zimbabwe, on the back of some impressive performances in domestic cricket, in recent seasons.

Akila, 23, shot the fame in 2012, when legendary Mahela Jayawardene picked him, purely on the basis of potential. At that time, he had played no FC cricket, List A cricket or Junior cricket.

A steady lower order batsman as well,  Akila was particularly impressive during recently concluded provincial super tournament.

One of the most mysterious off break bowler of modern cricket, Akila is said to have seven variations, including leg break, googly, carrom ball and doosra in his armry. And now, as he got control over his line and length as well, he could surely contribute Sri Lanka cricket for many years to come. Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews is also impressed with Akila.

“He has lot of variations and has improved a lot in recent times” Mathews said.
