Following an emergency Executive Committee (ExCo) meeting today (April 28), Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) elected president Shammi Silva led administration has decided to resign from their positions, Cricket Age Exclusively learns. Accordingly, the decision has been conveyed to Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage.
Cricket Age understands that along with Silva, Executive Committee members have also resigned en masse to allow fresh elections in near future.
Silva, who first won the SLC presidency in 2019 by majority votes of member clubs, was re-elected uncontested in 2021 2023 and 2025.
Recently, Silva-led administration brought several strict reforms, which include tighter fitness standards, mandatory disciplinary criteria, performance-based payment structures and most importantly salary and match fee deduction for underperforming players, while bonuses will be awarded only for victories against top four ranked international teams.
Several players, however, didn’t like Silva led administration’s strict regulations to uplift the national team’s performance following a poor T20 World Cup, which resulted in a combined campaign against democratically elected office bearers.
Silva’s administration’s departure paves the way for an Interim committee at Maitland Place. However it would be interesting to see how the International Cricket Council (ICC) looks at the whole scenario as any government intervention in an elected national body is, in principle, in contravention of the World Cricket’s governing body’s charter. Thus, how the ICC will view the change remains to be seen.
