At their pre-tournament press conference on Monday, the Delhi Capitals announced that KL Rahul will have a permanent opening slot in the Indian Premier League 2026 season.
The move, according to director of cricket Venugopal Rao and head coach Hemang Badani comes as DC want to address their top-order problems this season.
In the last season of the IPL, Delhi used as many as seven opening combinations. They started with Jake Fraser-McGurk and Faf du Plessis, but the Australian’s poor returns made them reconsider. One of the main reasons for the team’s poor season was an unstable top order that saw as many as 13 changes.
Their starts were impacted by this irregularity, which frequently left the middle order with too much work to do. Ahead of their opening match against the Lucknow Super Giants, Badani stated that over the past two years, opening partnerships have changed the course of T20 cricket, affirming that KL Rahul will continue to open for the team this season.
DC is anticipated to have a more dynamic presence at the top thanks to Rahul’s enhanced power game. The team will still need to choose his opening partner, though, and Pathum Nissanka, Abishek Porel, and Prithvi Shaw are some possibilities.
