‘Hard To Argue Against’: Ricky Ponting Says India’s T20I Squad Strongest In History

India recently stamped their authority in T20Is by retaining the World Cup title they won in 2024. Under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, India outclassed New Zealand in the final to win a record third ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and became the first team to defend the crown.

The current India T20I squad boasts of world-class performers and batting legend Ricky Ponting doesn’t see a reason why the squad cannot be branded as the best-ever in the format’s history.

“It’s really hard to argue a point against that,” Ponting said on the ICC Review. “If you look at this, not just the T20I team but their white-ball record in ICC events over the last five or six years, it’s quite remarkable.”

“A lot of people probably identified before this tournament started the depth and the strength that this current Indian team had, and also the experience that they have. This is a very, very strong Indian white-ball team, not just a T20 team. Back-to-back World Cups, hats off to them,” he added.

Between their two T20 World Cup triumphs, India didn’t lose a single bilateral T20I.

India were favourites to win the 2026 T20 World Cup but their campaign suffered a jolt when they suffered a big defeat to South Africa in the Super 8 round. However, they recovered and went on to create history.

Ponting also cited that playing regularly in IPL has put the Indian players in a good stead.

“The one thing that’s probably overlooked with this current team is the amount of experience and the amount of cricket a lot of these guys have played, whether it’s international cricket or even just the IPL,” he said.
