Sri Lanka Under-19s clinched a commanding five-wicket victory over South Africa Under-19s, chasing down a challenging target of 262 with authority, thanks to a superb century from Viran Chamuditha.
Batting first, South Africa Under-19s put together a competitive total of 261/7 in 50 overs. The innings was anchored by Jorich Van Schalkwyk, who played a marathon knock, bringing up his century off 125 balls after steady progress through the innings.
South Africa made a cautious start, reaching 54/0 at the end of the first powerplay, before building momentum through solid partnerships. They crossed 100 in 19.3 overs and 150 in 30.6 overs, but regular wickets in the middle overs prevented a late surge. Despite pushing past 250 in the final over, Sri Lanka’s bowlers kept the total within reach.
In reply, Sri Lanka Under-19s began confidently, racing to 63/1 in the first 10 overs. The foundation was laid by a brisk opening stand before Viran Chamuditha took control of the chase.
Chamuditha showcased composure and class, bringing up his half-century off 47 balls and later accelerating to a magnificent century off 90 balls, striking 11 fours and a six. He shared a crucial 100-run partnership with Senuja Wekunagoda, ensuring Sri Lanka stayed well ahead of the required rate.
At the drinks break, Sri Lanka were cruising at 90/1, and by the time Chamuditha reached three figures, the outcome was firmly in their grasp. Sri Lanka crossed 200 in 32.5 overs and eventually sealed the chase, reaching the target with five wickets in hand.
Chamuditha’s match-winning knock of 110 off 94 balls stood out as the defining performance of the contest, guiding Sri Lanka Under-19s to a composed and well-earned victory after a disciplined all-round team effort.
