Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar is hoping that Shubman Gill will take his snub from the T20 World Cup 2026 squad in the right spirit. Gill was the shocking omission from the side after the squad was announced by the selection committee on Saturday, December 20, given that he was the vice-captain of the side during the South Africa T20I series.
Gill scored just 32 runs in three matches against the Proteas and ended the year by missing out on playing in the Ahmedabad T20I. Gill ended 2025 by scoring 291 runs in 15 matches with an average of 24.25 and a strike-rate of 137.26. Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said that leaving Gill out from the side is surprising as he is a class act and a quality batter.
The Indian legend feels that Gill’s lengthy layoff due to injury may have put off his rhythm.
“Leaving out Shubman Gill is surprising. A ‘class act, a quality batter’. I know he struggled in a few matches, but in the end, class always comes through.”
Gavaskar further added, “He was coming back after a long break and didn’t have his rhythm. We have seen in the IPL how good he is, so the lack of touch may have gone against him. I hope Shubman takes this in the right spirit. I wish him the best. Some of his injuries have been strange.”
