Rank turner haunts India again as South Africa defend 123 to end 15-year wait

India suffered a humiliating 30-run loss to South Africa in the first Test of the two-match series at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

India’s defeat while chasing a target of 124 runs now ranks among the lowest Test targets the team has failed to chase. South Africa’s defence of 124, on the other hand, is also one of their most impressive performances, as it is the second-lowest target they have successfully defended in Test cricket. This match is also among the lowest targets ever defended on Indian soil.

Off-spinner Simon Harmer led South Africa to a historic victory, securing an unassailable 1-0 lead in the two-match series. This victory marks South Africa’s first Test win in India in 15 years.

Chasing a target of 124 on the third day, India was bowled out for 93/9, with skipper Shubman Gill unable to continue due to a neck injury. Simon Harmer achieved figures of 4/21, while Marco Jansen contributed with 2/15 from his seven overs.

Washington Sundar made a valiant effort, scoring 31 off 92 balls, but India’s overall response was weak on a pitch that heavily favoured the bowlers.

The second Test is scheduled to be played in Guwahati from November 22-26.
