West Indies men’s cricket team head coach Darren Sammy has broken his silence on rape allegations against a current player, stating that everyone wants justice to be served. Sammy, a former captain, said he had spoken to the players about the media reports and expressed hope that the proper processes would be followed in investigating the claims.
Speaking to the press ahead of the second Test in their three-match series against Australia in Grenada, Sammy said that full support would be given to any investigation into the matter.
As many as 11 women, including a teenager, have alleged rape, sexual assault, or unwanted sexual advances by the cricketer, according to reports from local media in the Caribbean.
The player in question is from Guyana, as reported by Kaieteur News. Several of the women are said to have lodged formal complaints with law enforcement authorities in Guyana; however, the report also alleges there have been efforts to suppress the matter.
“One thing I can say is that we believe in justice. We are a community that believes justice must be served. However, there’s a process. We will continue to support in whatever way we can to make sure that due process and the right system are followed. As a cricketing board, and for me as the head coach, I want justice for everyone,” Sammy said.
