The highly-anticipated Sri Lanka’s domestic cricket season is likely to start from October 20, if the lockdown-like restrictions will be lifted from the first day of the month, Cricket Age exclusively learns.

The much hyped domestic season – consisting of limited overs and major club league tournament – was originally scheduled to be played in September. However due to  grim Covid situation in the Island, it was postponed indefinitely. Now, as situation is very much under control and the government is likely to lift the lockdown curbs from October 1, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) tournament committee has prepared a schedule to resume the domestic season.

Accordingly, tournament committee chairman Samantha Dodanwela Yesterday sent a new circular to member clubs, to notify about new dates of the proposed schedule. Cricket Age understands that the limited overs tournament is all set to kick from October 20, followed by major club league tournament.

“We have notified to our stakeholders that if lockdown gets lifted as scheduled, we will be ready to start the limited overs tournament by October 20. For that, the clubs will have to complete the players registration process by October 10 and on October 13 we have called for a membership meeting to finalize the fixtures” a tournament committee member told Cricket Age.

Furthermore, the tournament committee is on the opinion to complete the major club league tournament also by early next year.

“Mr. Dodanwela is likely to request former great Aravinda de Silva led Technical Advisory Committee to push back the provincial tournament at least by one month, so we will be able to complete the league tournament as well” tournament committee member added.

Yesterday, the SLC announced that 2nd edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), Sri Lanka’s top most domestic T20 tournament with an international flavor, will be held from 4th to 23rd December and will consist of 5 teams, with each having a 20-player squad. A squad will consist of 14 Local and 6 Overseas Players.
