Mitchell Marsh Ruled Out Of Pakistan ODIs, Josh Inglis To Lead Australia

Australia’s stand-in captain, Mitchell Marsh, has been ruled out of the ODI series against Pakistan due to an ankle injury. His availability for the subsequent tour of Bangladesh also remains uncertain, leaving the visitors with a depleted squad and a leadership vacuum.

Marsh, who was set to lead the side in the absence of regular skipper Pat Cummins, did not travel to Pakistan with the rest of the squad. He had already missed Lucknow Super Giants’ final IPL 2026 fixture against Punjab Kings and returned to Australia earlier this month after their game against Rajasthan Royals.

In Marsh’s absence, wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis is expected to take over captaincy duties. Inglis has limited international leadership experience but did lead Australia in an ODI and three T20Is against Pakistan in late 2024. Alex Carey remains another option, having previously captained the side during an ODI series in the Caribbean in 2021.

Australia are already without several first-choice players, including Cummins, Travis Head, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood, largely due to their involvement in the IPL playoffs. The absence of Marsh and Head, Australia’s preferred ODI opening pair, further complicates team balance. Matt Short was likely to open alongside Marsh, but selectors must now identify another partner, while also trying to solidify middle-order combinations ahead of next year’s World Cup.

Marsh’s absence is particularly impactful given his recent form. He was among the standout performers in IPL 2026, finishing as the seventh-highest run-scorer with a strike rate above 160, including three scores over 90 in his last four innings.

No replacement has been officially named yet, although Cooper Connolly could be drafted in.
