Najmul Hossain Shanto is leading Bangladesh in the first Test of the ongoing two-match series against Pakistan. On Day 1 of the first Test taking place at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, Shanto entered his name in the record books by becoming the first Bangladeshi captain to score a Test century against Pakistan in Tests. Shanto walked out to bat at No. 4 for the hosts in the first innings and played a knock of 101 runs. He faced 130 balls during his stay at the crease and scored 12 fours and 2 sixes.
Mushfiqur Rahim previously held the record for the highest score by a Bangladeshi captain in a Test match against Pakistan. Rahim had scored 53 runs from 143 balls for Bangladesh as a No. 7 batter in the 2nd innings of the Mirpur Test played from December 17 to 21 in 2011.
The century by Shanto on Friday is his ninth triple-digit score in Tests. He is overall the eighth Bangladeshi batter to score a Test century against Pakistan.
Former captain and current chief selector Habibul Bashar was the first Bangladeshi to score a Test century against Pakistan, and wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das is the only Bangladeshi to slam multiple centuries against the Pakistani team in the five-day format of the game.
