Sri Lanka Cricket set to reintroduce strict fitness standards

Written by Rohit Pawar

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is reintroducing strict fitness standards as a primary selection criterion for upcoming tours to restore discipline and boost performance. This move, driven by recent, disappointing performances in the 2026 T20 World Cup, will prioritize player fitness in squad selection.

The decision follows a poor showing in the 2026 T20 World Cup, where the team faced early elimination.  Wanindu Hasaranga and Matheesha Pathirana both ruled out with hamstring problems, Eshan Malinga was sidelined with a shoulder injury, and Kusal Mendis missed the final Super Eight clash against Pakistan due to a niggle picked up in the New Zealand game.

The move aims to address issues like recurring player injuries (e.g., hamstring issues). Key details regarding the revamped, strict fitness standards include:

  • Focus on Core Fitness: Fitness is now considered “non-negotiable” by team leadership.
  • Benchmark Standards: Players are expected to meet specific, high-level standards, such as completing a 2km run within a designated time limit (e.g., 8 minutes and 10 seconds, as indicated in a recent report) and maintaining low skinfold levels.
  • Selection Impact: Failing these tests will likely result in exclusion from the national side.
