New Zealand Pacer Matt Henry To Take Parental Leave Before T20 World Cup Semi-Final

Written by Praveen CA

New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry will leave the squad on parental leave after Friday’s (February 27) 2026 men’s T20 World Cup clash against England to be with his wife, Holly, for the birth of their second child. The Blackcaps didn’t confirm but remain hopeful to see Henry rejoin the squad in a few days, if they were to qualify for the semi-final and the final of the tournament.

Henry has been pivotal to New Zealand’s campaign so far, taking six wickets in five matches at an average of 22.17 and an economy rate of 7.39.

“Firstly, we’re all very excited for Matt and Holly on the arrival of their second child,” head coach Rob Walter said in a statement. “It’s a very significant moment for their family and we’re wishing them all the best. There’s a lot of water to go under the bridge but we’re hopeful that the stars align for the team and for Matt and that we’ll see him back competing in the final phases of the competition.”

The Black Caps’ statement suggested they are unlikely to name a replacement for him till there’s more clarity on his possible return, but they are stocked in the pace department with Jacob Duffy, Kyle Jamieson, and Jimmy Neesham waiting in the wings.

Henry was named in New Zealand’s playing 11 for the England clash. It is an extremely important match for them. A win for the Kiwis would guarantee a berth in the semi-final, but a loss would open the gate for Pakistan. If New Zealand lose by a big margin and Pakistan overcome their net run rate (NRR) deficit in Saturday’s match against Sri Lanka, the Men in Green will reach the semis.
