Australia, UK, India, Russia, and Germany are all storming Colombo as the much-awaited India vs Pakistan clash in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 draws near. The excitement surrounding this historic match on February 15th has sparked an unprecedented surge in tourism to Sri Lanka, turning Colombo into the ultimate destination for cricket fans.

With both countries’ passionate fanbases flooding the city, hotels like the Marriott and Hilton are already seeing bookings skyrocket, while airlines such as SriLankan AirlinesQantas, and British Airways are reporting skyrocketing demand. Flight prices have surged by up to 300%, making last-minute travel more expensive than ever. As the stadium prepares to host a sold-out crowd, hotels in Colombo are witnessing a rush of fans eager to secure a place to stay near the action, with room rates seeing a steep increase. This surge in travel not only benefits the hospitality and airline industries but also boosts Sri Lanka’s economy, highlighting the country’s pivotal role in hosting this highly anticipated match.

The global appeal of the India vs Pakistan match is evident in the diverse array of countries whose citizens are flocking to Colombo. Fans from Australia, the UK, India, Russia, and Germany are leading the charge. A one-way ticket from Mumbai to Colombo that typically costs around ₹15,000 is now priced at around ₹45,000 to ₹50,000 due to the surge in demand.

For UK travelers, airlines like British Airways and SriLankan Airlines have significantly increased their flights to Colombo, with prices skyrocketing for seats in the week leading up to the match. A round-trip flight from London to Colombo, which usually costs around £500, is now priced at upwards of £1,200. The surge in prices is particularly noticeable for last-minute bookings, with prices continuing to climb as the match day approaches.

The hospitality sector in Sri Lanka is experiencing an economic boom as it prepares for the flood of cricket fans visiting Colombo. Hotels in Colombo have seen a sharp rise in bookings, with premium properties like the Marriott ColomboHilton Colombo, and Shangri-La Colombo fully booked for the days surrounding the match. These properties are charging premium rates during the World Cup, with room prices reaching as high as $600 per night during the event.

For those looking for a more budget-friendly option, there are several mid-range hotels and guesthouses in Colombo that are also witnessing an increase in bookings. However, even these accommodations are seeing a significant price hike, with some rates more than doubling during the match period. Tour operators in Sri Lanka have also been quick to offer cricket-themed vacation packages, allowing tourists to enjoy not only the match but also the island’s stunning landscapes and cultural heritage.

The surge in visitors is also benefiting local businesses. Restaurants, retail stores, and other tourist attractions are seeing increased foot traffic. The city’s popular Galle Face Green area, known for its lively atmosphere and seaside views, is expected to be a hub of activity, with tourists flocking to watch the match while enjoying local delicacies.

“Most fans are coming on all-inclusive packages that could be $1,500-$2000 or even higher depending on ticket, hotel, and flight prices,” President of Sri Lanka Inbound Tour Operators, Nalin Jayasundera said.

Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, Buddhika Hewawasam, revealed that a sizeable chunk of tourists who have flocked in to the island nation, known to be a traveler’s haven for its scenic beauty and relative cheap cost of living, since the beginning of the month travelled down to get a sight of the top-billed clash.

“This is clearly showing confidence in Sri Lanka as a neutral cricket venue. Whether it’s India, Pakistan or Bangladesh, this is a welcome message to all South Asian countries that they can play cricket in Sri Lanka,” Hewawasam said.

Sri Lanka also cite this as an opportunity to prove their virtue as a neutral venue, which has the bandwidth to host the heated rivalry, going forward.

India began their campaign with a victory over the USA, followed by a win against Namibia in their second match. Meanwhile, Pakistan narrowly escaped a defeat against the Netherlands in the opening game before securing a convincing win over the USA in their next Group A match.
