T20 World Cup: ICC refuses to bow down, rejects PCB’s demands

The International Cricket Council rejected three of the five demands put forward by the Pakistan Cricket Board in return for reversing its decision to boycott the February 15 match against India. Pakistan’s demands included the resumption of bilateral series against India and a tri-series involving Bangladesh.

The ICC also gave PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi a day to consult Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and confirm the board’s stance. The global governing body is expected to make an official announcement on the status of the India–Pakistan match either on Monday evening or Tuesday morning.

The Pakistan government, standing in solidarity with Bangladesh, had instructed the national team to compete in the T20 World Cup 2026 but not play against India.

“Naqvi will brief the PM on the communications he has had with the Bangladesh, Sri Lankan and Emirates cricket boards and with the ICC on the crisis,” a source was quoted as saying.

A two-member ICC delegation met PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi in Lahore on Sunday. Also present in the meeting was Bangladesh Cricket Board president, Aminul Islam. It is believed that the BCB chief has also urged the PCB Chief to reconsider the boycott while also demanding the T20 World Cup appearance fee as a compensation in front of the ICC.

Earlier, cricket boards of Sri Lanka and UAE have also written to PCB, urging the Pakistan board to reconsider the decision.

PCB makes three demands in front of ICC

Recent reports indicate that the ICC had appointed deputy chairman Imran Khwaja to lead back-channel talks with the PCB to ensure that the match remains on track. The PCB is also said to have set three conditions before the ICC for playing the match against India. These reportedly include restoration of cricketing ties with India, an increased share of ICC revenue, and enforcement of the handshake policy

BCB’s new demand

In a latest development, the Bangladesh Cricket Board and Pakistan Cricket Board have demanded a tri-series involving India and themselves.
