Sri Lanka’s opening batter Viran Chamuditha on Saturday (January 17) broke the record for the highest individual score in U19 World Cup history. The 17-year-old left-handed batter scored 192 runs from 143 balls for Sri Lanka in their U19 World Cup 2026 Group C match against Japan at Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek. He slammed 26 fours and 1 six during his stay at the crease for the Vimath Dinsara-led side and added 328 runs in 43.5 overs for the first wicket with Dimantha Mahavithana, who made 115 runs from 125 balls.
Chamuditha narrowly missed out on becoming the first batter in U19 World Cup history to score a double century but did enough to break the record of the highest individual score in the competition’s history.
Before Chamuditha, the record of the highest individual score in U19 World Cup history was in the name of Sri Lanka’s Hasitha Boyagoda. Hasitha Boyagoda scored 191 runs from 152 balls against Kenya in Lincoln on January 23, 2018.
There was more history created as his 328-run opening partnership with Dimantha Mahavitana was the highest partnership for any wicket in the tournament’s history.
The mammoth opening stand helped Sri Lanka set a target of 388 for Japan U-19 in their first match of the 2026 edition.
