BCCI to select same squad for New Zealand series and T20 World Cup 2026

The BCCI selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is moving towards selecting a largely identical squad for the five-match T20 series against New Zealand and the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. The T20 World Cup begins in February 2026, and as per regulations, all teams must announce their final 15-member squads a month before the tournament. Consequently, the selectors are banking on stability while minimizing changes.

The T20 series against New Zealand begins on January 21 and will be Team India’s final T20 competition before the World Cup. Therefore, the selection committee is inclined to retain the team selected for this series as the core World Cup squad.

According to the selectors, with only 10 T20 matches remaining before the World Cup, unnecessary changes will be avoided to maintain the team’s rhythm.

According to sources, the recent T20 series against South Africa was Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav’s last opportunity to evaluate the players’ performance.

Now, the New Zealand series will be a “dress rehearsal” for the World Cup, so the scope for experimentation has almost ended.

The selection committee does not want to make changes to the team this time as the World Cup approaches. Varun Chakravarthy was included in place of Yashasvi Jaiswal at the last minute in the Champions Trophy, leading to discontent and questions about the selection process.

To avoid such situations, this time the emphasis is on maintaining a stable team.
