Never easy to come back after injury: Rishabh Pant on recovery from toe fracture

Written by Shreyas Vyas

Rishabh Pant is all set for his India comeback after recovering from a painful toe injury that brought a premature end to his England tour earlier this year. Pant was in red-hot form during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, hitting twin centuries in a Test before he copped a blow to his toe while batting in Manchester that pushed him to the sidelines for several months.

Despite a toe fracture, Pant won hearts when he walked out to bat in India’s first innings in the 4th Test at Old Trafford and scored a half-century to play a vital role in the contest eventually ending in a draw.

Having made a successful return to competitive cricket recently, Pant says “he’s feeling lot of gratitude for life” after another comeback from injury.

“After an injury, it is never easy to come back. But God has been kind always and he has blessed me always, and this time also, and very happy to be back,” said Pant in a video posted by the BCCI.

“See, every time I take the field, one thing I try to be is to be grateful. That’s why I always look up and thank God, my parents, my family, everyone has supported me (during the recovery phase),” he added.

Pant was involved in a horrific car crash in December 2022 and was expected to be away from cricket for a long period. However, he made stunning progress to captain Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024 before being picked in India’s T20 world cup winning squad later that year.

“One thing I do is to focus on controllables, luck is one thing that you cannot control. So, I try not to think about that, as there are so many factors that we don’t factor in,” Pant said.

“But if you can keep your mind in a place where a lot of things are not affecting you, and you focus only on things that matter to you. You will find happiness if you keep on doing things that make you feel good, especially when you are injured,” he added.
