John Campbell is playing as an opening batter for the West Indies in the ongoing second Test against India at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The left-handed batter scored 87 runs from 145 balls for the visitors on Sunday (October 12) and added 13 more to his tally on Monday morning to complete his maiden Test century for the West Indies.

He reached the 100-run mark in 174 balls by hitting Ravindra Jadeja for a six on the fifth ball of the 58th over.

The century in the third innings of the ongoing red-ball match in Delhi helped Campbell become the first West Indies opener in 19 years to score a Test century against the Indian team.

The last opening batter before Campbell to reach the triple-figure mark for the Caribbeans against India was Daren Ganga.

In the first innings of the Basseterre Test, which was played from June 22 to 26 in 2006, Ganga scored 135 runs from 294 balls for the Brian Lara-led side.

He is overall the 14th West Indies opener to score a Test century against the Indian team in the past 77 years.

Gordon Greenidge holds the record of scoring Test centuries as an opener for the West Indies against the Indian team. Greenidge played 23 Tests against India and crossed the 100-run mark five times. Five batters – Allan Rae, Jeffrey Stollmeyer, Roy Fredericks, Desmond Haynes and Wavell Hinds – scored two Test centuries each as openers against the Indian team.
