Asalanka’s inept leadership ruin Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup hopes!

Written by N Krishnamurthy

In comparison to Bangladesh and Pakistan, against whom Sri Lanka meekly surrendered and eventually knocked out of the Asia Cup even before the final super4 match against mighty India, the Island nation had a far superior batting and bowling unit! However, an arrogant captain Charith Asalanka, with his on field blunders as well as favoritism in team selection, single handedly abruptly derailed Sri Lanka’s asian supremacy campaign!

Sri Lanka entered the super4 unbeaten! Asalanka’s led side’s first opponent was Bangladesh, a team which advanced in the super4 only by Sri Lanka’s win against Afghanistan! It was a match, where Sri Lanka were favorites! Even then, Sri Lanka lost it, largely due to Asalanka’s on field decisions. Chasing the target of 169, Bangladesh were struggling till 14th over, with the required run rate increased to 9.16. However, out of nowhere, Asalanka handed the ball to Kamindu Mendis, who didn’t bowl much till then due to finger Injury. Bangladesh batters muscled 16 runs from Kamindu’s over and brought down the RRR to  7.80.

Even in the group stage, Asalanka’s inability to read the game almost proved fatal for Sri Lanka, when against Afghanistan, he handed over the final over to young Dunith Wellalage. Veteran Mohammed Nabi cashed it gleefully with a miraculous five sixes onslaught!

Then, In a do or die super4 match against Pakistan, Sri Lanka’s team combination was all wrong. At the expense  of an extra batter, allrounder Chamika Karunaratne was added. At the end, it turned into a brain fade decision, as Sri Lanka could posted a below par score of 133, with Karunaratne playing a hopeless, tailender like innings.

With these repetitive tactical moves which backfired, Asalanka proved that he doesn’t belong to captaincy. He might be dreaming to become another CAPTAIN COOL, but weaknesses in his leadership were exposed big time in the Asia Cup!

Thilina Kandamby is another misfit in the national setup. A parachuted batting coach, who was brought into the system by Mahela Jayawardene with hidden agendas, is, in reality, good for nothing. During Kandamby’s tenure, Sri Lanka have never performed as a batting unit. Whatever success Sri Lanka tested in the last two years on turning home tracks, is largely due to individual performances. If Sri Lanka dreams to play better cricket in the T20 World cup early next year on home soil, Kandamby needs to be kicked out as first priority. Whether Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has that courage or not, is a different story!

Another issue SLC immediately needs to address is the ever growing interference of players mafia in the system. Right from Charlie Austin days, these players mafia, who pretend to be managers, not only exist, but manipulate, dictate terms as well. For example, Asanga Wijewardene, who manages Sri Lanka’s at least half a dozen contracted players. The accusations are that he has become an integral part of a GANG, which consists of SOME MOST INFLUENTIAL FIGURES in Sri Lanka’s national team setup (head coach Sanath Jayasuryia can shed more light on the existence of this gang). Thus, it’s become very easy for someone like him to promote his players for national duty!

Then comes the ever present domination of Singhlease Sports Club (SSC), Asalanka’s domestic club. The accusations are that under Asalanka’s captaincy,  SSC players have constantly been  favoured and promoted. Ironically, SSC, once a premier club in the domestic circuit, has been relegated to division two and has performed poorly there as well. The club and it’s players are not good enough to perform even in lower division, but they are being promoted for the national side under Asalanka’s leadership.

The upcoming T20 World cup to be co-hosted by Sri Lanka along with India. As a host nation, Sri Lanka are expected to at least reach the knockouts.

But for that to happen, Sri Lanka needs to take immediate actions against all these burning Issues!

EXPLAINED: An Asia Cup campaign marred with Asalanka’s leadership incompetence

Tactical errors, such as poor decision-making during the Bangladesh loss and inconsistent batting with an unbalanced lineup in the Pakistan match, contributed to Sri Lanka’s exit from the Asia Cup 2025. Specific missteps included Kamindu Mendis bowling an expensive over and batting issues, with the team lacking a strong middle-order batter and a balanced team composition, as highlighted by analyses of their performances.

Specific Tactical Errors:

Bowling Decisions: The choice to have Kamindu Mendis bowl an over that conceded 16 runs is cited as a potential costly mistake, especially in a tight game, suggesting the captain should have entrusted Dasun Shanaka with those overs.

Batting Order and Team Balance: There is a critique of the batting lineup’s composition and the placement of players like Kamindu Mishara, who was not an ideal T20 batter for the role he was performing. The team’s structure, lacking a capable seventh batter or all-rounder, was also seen as a tactical flaw.

Lack of Aggression: Against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka’s batsmen failed to attack the bowlers enough after the initial partnership, which is seen as a wasted opportunity on a batter-friendly pitch.

Consequences of Errors:

Loss to Bangladesh: Sri Lanka’s loss to Bangladesh was a significant setback, highlighting the need for tactical improvement.

Exit from the Tournament: Following the subsequent losses to Pakistan and Bangladesh, Sri Lanka was eliminated from contention for the Asia Cup final.

Missed Opportunities: Dropped catches, as seen against Hong Kong, also cost Sri Lanka valuable opportunities, although this was more a fielding error than a tactical one.
