Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa said that Shreyas Iyer needs to get his much-deserved attention after his brilliant innings of 79 (98) vs New Zealandon Sunday, March 2 in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The right-handed batter played a sublime knock to bail India out of trouble after they were reduced to 30/3 in the first seven overs. Iyer stitched a crucial 98-run partnership with Axar Patel (42 off 61) for the fourth wicket to help India cross the 100-run mark.
Iyer’s innings was studded with four fours and two sixes as he carefully planned his innings on the spin-friendly surface. Following his marvellous knock, Uthappa was full of praise for India batter as he extolled him for handling the pressure well and stitching crucial stand with Axar.
“Not just the fact that he scored runs under pressure, but the way he did, the way he managed pressure. The way he absorbed it, the time he took, the way he stitched up a partnership with Axar there. He played that lead role to attack even when Axar at a certain point chipped in to take the aggressive option out,” Uthappa said on Star Sports.
Furthermore, the former batter said that Iyer has been flying under the radar over the past few years and deserves to get the attention of fans and pundits.
“But then at all points he absorbed the pressure and up the ante at the right moments to be able to revive India’s innings. At 30/3 they were struggling, so they needed a partnership and he was able to do that, which is why I think this guy is still flying under the radar. I’m very happy he’s flying under the radar, but it’s time that he needs to get the attention he deserves,” he added.
